Spanish motor insurance
Spain, just like all other EU countries, requires that all vehicles be insured to a minimum of third party fire and theft. Fully comprehensive insurance is also available. If you have any no claims bonuses earned elsewhere then these can mostly be credited to your Spanish Insurance.
One thing to remember, Spanish insurance payouts are smaller as they take into account the wear and tear of the car and only pay a percentage of its value in the event of a write off.
Precautions
The Spanish insurance companies will expect you to have shown common sense in the care of you vehicle and may well refuse to pay out if you have been careless or silly with the precautions you have taken. For instance never leave the keys in the ignition when you fill you vehicle with fuel at a service station and it goes without saying that you never leave the engine running even though it may get warm without the aircon working. Note that if you leave you car in a parking area that you have to pay for then there is a legal responsibility of the park owners for the car in their care (in Spain)
Cars from out of Spain
International Motor Insurance Certificate (Green Card)
It is essential that you inform your insurance company before you attempt to drive in Spain. The Green Card is no longer compulsory but third party insurance certainly is, so ensure you always carry your insurance certificate along with your vehicle registration and current tax disk. Your insurance may charge you an additional fee to cover you for the time in Spain.
